Barcelona, the Old Town
The helicopter ride through Barcelona gives us a unique view of the neighborhood and allows
us to understand the network of small streets and other buildings in a different way.
From the air, the difference between the ancient city that corresponds to the Roman and
medieval times of the city, l’Eixample and the modern city is clearly appreciated.
The helicopter flight through Barcelona allows us to identify the most emblematic buildings in
each of the neighborhoods. the Old Town or “Ciutat Vella”, we can clearly see the Rambla, the
most popular promenade in Barcelona, and a boundary between the Gothic and Raval
neighborhoods, and Plaça Reial, one of the liveliest in the neighborhood, filled with bars and
restaurants. We will be able to see several of the gothic churches of the city, like, Santa Maria
del Pi, or San Justo and Pastor. The “Plaça del rei” epicenter of the medieval city, and the
network of small streets that conserve its urban structure of other times and the Cathedral with
its square that responds to a later remodeling of the neighborhood.
El Born takes its name from the old “Born” supply market and part of “Ciutat Vella”, it is formed
by the neighborhoods of Sant Pere and Santa Caterina and the Barri de la Ribera, one of the
most attractive in the city.
Montcada Street, with its medieval palaces, the Picasso Museum, the Church of Santa Maria
del Mar, also called Cathedral of the Sea, next to Passeig del Born, are places not to be missed.
From the air, we will see clearly the buildings and the roof of the restored Santa Caterina
Market, with its colorful ceramics rejoicing the aerial view of the neighborhood.
We cannot forget the Palau de la Música Catalana, the masterpiece of Catalan modernism that
also deserves a visit.
Although the neighborhood has suffered over the centuries, revolts, wars and urbanistic
modifications, retains a happy and popular flavor, its inhabitants have always been involved in
community life. Currently, and in an amazing balance, immigrants, hipsters, modern, tourists,
neighbors, new neighbors with businesses ascending to gastronomy or ecological tendencies
live, and people who love popular neighborhoods.
You should not miss the occasion of this special sight!
